Winter 2019 Schedule & Workshops

Canvas Art Classes & Workshops provide a fun and enriching opportunity for adults, teens & young artists to build art and design skills while exploring a variety of media. Our creative art classes, pop ups & workshops are led by top local working artists and art educators. 10 week course: 1-hour classes $285 | 1.5- hour classes $295 | 3-hour classes $325 *All materials included except Oil Painting, please see Instructor’s material list. ($25 materials fee for 3D Design).

Monday

Studio Mix I

In our core foundation course students work in a variety of media and methods, such as graphite, pastel, acrylics, clay, printmaking, and collage. Explore the elements of art (line, shape, form, color, value, texture, space) and the principles of design (balance, contrast, emphasis, movement, pattern, rhythm, and unity).

Grades: k – 2nd

Adventures in Comics

Channel your inner superhero and comedian. Character development, visual storytelling, comic strip paneling, pencils, inking, and coloring are just some of the skills learned in this exciting class. Students will create original short story comics.

Grades: 4th – 8th

Tuesday

Art Start

For our youngest artists! An introduction to work in a variety of media and methods. Designed for smaller hands and big imaginations, students will be exposed to drawing, painting, printmaking, collage, clay and more!

Studio Mix II

Drawing, Painting and Clay Building! Students will continue to study the elements of art and the principles of design in creative 2D and 3D projects. Students will delve deeper in learning about art history and different techniques using medias such as graphite, colored pencil, pastel, acrylic, watercolor, clay, printmaking, and collage.

Wednesday

Drawing & Painting

Make two dimensions come alive. Master the elements of art and principles of design while drawing in graphite, charcoal and pastel; painting in watercolor and acrylics. Students will explore observational drawing, abstraction and color theory in this foundational course.

Advanced Drawing & Painting

In this advanced course, students will master the principles of drawing and painting including line, value, color, texture, space, perspective and composition. Students will experience observational and imaginative illustration by diving into one specific medium at a time in projects ranging from portraiture, figure drawing, still life portraiture, landscapes, architectural and interior landscapes, fantastical and abstraction.

Thursday

Classical Oil Painting

Learn a basic approach to chiaroscuro (light-dark) studio painting in oils. Use classical composition, mix shadow color, mix local color, model form, master edgework, identify and correct common misconceptions of color value. Special focus will be on observational still life and landscape painting using the prismatic palette method.

3D Design!

Create 3-dimensional projects using sculpy, paper mache, and more! This comprehensive class is for beginner, intermediate and advanced students that will challenge and foster each one’s artistic freedom.

Portfolio Intensive

Portfolio Intensive is designed to assist pre-college students create a comprehensive art portfolio for college admission. At Canvas, students will experience a tailored program in a small group setting that aligns a structured series of art projects along with the student’s individual artistic voice to fulfill the requirements for a college admission portfolio.

Winter Mini Sessions

Sew Cute: sewing skills for home and runway

Learn the elements of sewing in our 6-week beginner’s sewing course with Karen Herman. Study patterns & sewing machine basics while create fun projects for the home and the runway!

Weaving Fun

Learn the basics of tapestry in our 4-week beginner’s weaving course with Meg Sellig. Get creative with fun fiber colors and textures. Learn how to set up the loom, basic tapestry stitches and design!
